We will show you craters in detail you never thought imaginable!  \nObservation is from 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.\, but we recommend arriving around 8:30pm to set up your chairs or picnic blankets. \nPlease register below as attendance is capped at 25. \nWe suggest bringing the following items with you: \nCamp chair or picnic blanket to sit on in between observing \nA headlamp with a red light setting (white light or bright LED lights ruin night vision) \nClose toed shoes \nAn extra layer to keep warm \nCost \nThere is no charge for this event. SUMMARY:Goat Hikes Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Goat Hikes\nSchedule a hike with the friendly goats at Pumpkin Vine Family Farm!\nFor a full description and video of our goat hikes\, click here. \nWe’re committed to sharing the farm with everyone\, so there is no charge for the hike\, however\, if you are able\, there is a recommended donation of $5/person or $20/family\, Donations support trail maintenance along with the training and care of the trail goats. You can make your donation at the farm on the day of your hike. Just look for the donation jar at the main table. \nWe limit the number of hikers to 10 per session\, so that everyone can have a chance to interact with the goats. If your party is more than 10 people\, please find a session that is fully open. Then\, complete the registration form below and show that you’re bringing 10 guests. This will reserve your spot. You’ll then need to email us at info@pumpkinvinefamilyfarm.com to let us know the total number in your party and we’ll try to accommodate you. \nIf you need to cancel\, please let us know by 9 am on the morning of your hike. You can text or call Kelly at (207) 549-3096. \nPrepare For Your Hike:\nWe recommend getting to the farm a half an hour early\, so you can visit the baby goats in the barn and shop at the farmers market\, which offers some great snacks for the hike (think smoothies and cheese sticks!) \nSafe = Fun! \nOur goats have been hand reared from birth and are fully a member of their human herd. They love people but do not always realize where their horn tips are\, so adults need to supervise children’s interactions with them. Children younger than 4 must be able to be carried if the situation warrants. \nBe prepared for a Maine outdoor activity\, so you can make the most of your time with our goats. We recommend you wear waterproof boots in the spring and a hat and sunscreen in the summer. A water bottle and bug spray are always a good idea\, and be sure to check for ticks afterward. \nOur safety waiver is now available online — by registering for a hike\, you agree to the waiver for yourself and all members of your party\, including any minors in your party. We ask that you share the link to the waiver with everyone accompanying you to the farm. \nIf it rains or is over 90\, we usually cancel or reschedule hikes to avoid stressing the animals (and the people!). \nTo reserve your spot for the hike please click on the  “register” button below and complete the registration form that appears. Be sure to let us know how many there will be in your party to help us with accurate registration numbers.  Thanks so much for your help. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the farm!

SUMMARY:Birds and Bees and The Plants They Need
DESCRIPTION:Grab your binoculars and come take a walk through Pumpkin Vine Family Farm’s beautiful bobolink and pollinator habitat.  Join the Pumpkin Vine family\, Ag Allies grassland bird program\, US Fish & Wildlife\, and Midcoast Conservancy for Free Field and Pollinator Walks on Sunday June 30th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Pumpkin Vine’s fields in Somerville\, Maine. \n(The pollinator photos below were taken by Amber Lewis and the bobolink photo was taken by Laura Lecker.)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Celebrate Pollinator Week by immersing yourself in the amazing world of field birds\, bees and native pollinators\, then take home some plants to enrich your own habitat! We’re offering not one but TWO guided walk & talks through our farm fields. At first glance\, they may look overgrown and empty… look closer\, however\, and you’ll see it’s teeming with life! Join one or both walks; we’ll have a break in between to get lunch at our farmers’ market. \nField Bird Walk from 10-11\, led by Laura Lecker of Ag Allies\, focuses on the protection of bobolinks on farm fields\, with the opportunity to observe parents and juveniles in protected habitat. If you are interested in revitalizing an old field to improve grassland habitat\, this workshop is the place to get advice on starting that process. We will also discuss the life history of our steeply declining grassland bird species and conservation practices that can be implemented to help them.  \nPollinator Walk from 12 – 1\, led by Hannah Mullally of US Fish and Wildlife\, introduces you to incredible bees\, choosy butterflies\, and helpful hoverflies. During this walk and talk\, we will discuss the breadth of Maine’s native pollinators\, their importance in our ecosystem and on the farm\, and how you can support these small but mighty creatures. We will especially focus on the process Pumpkin Vine Family Farm took to establish native pollinator habitat and how they integrate pollinator habitat into their operation. \nTo register please go click on the “Register” button below. If you have questions\, please email Pumpkin Vine Family Farm at info@pumpkinvinefamilyfarm.com or call Kelly at (207) 549-3096.  \n  \nSince 2016\, Ag Allies\, hosted by Somerset County SWCD\, has worked with land trusts and landowners statewide to increase the nesting success of grassland birds using incentive payments\, technical assistance\, and education. The program empowers landowners to make sustainable\, bird-friendly management changes on their land and improve the chance for nesting success of grassland birds in Maine.  \nPumpkin Vine Family Farm is a working goat dairy and farm education center located on the historic Hewett homestead at 217 Hewett Rd in Somerville\, ME. A truly unique celebration of sound\, Fiddles and Feathers combines live folk music\, beginning at 6:15\, with the chance to hear – and learn about! – the eastern whippoorwill\, whose magical call\, once iconic of summer evenings\, is now in decline. \nVisitors are welcome to arrive at 6 pm to find their perfect place on our new event lawn; lawn chairs and /or picnic blankets are recommended\, as are bug spray\, hats\, and sweaters. As the suns descends over the farm fields\, enjoy the energetic and diverse folk music of Katherine Liccardo on fiddle and Matt Consul on mandolin. Professional musicians from New York City\, Katherine and Matt have not only made Maine their home\, but they have embraced the local fiddle and folk traditions\, including an annual performance at the farm.  \nWhen darkness brings their performance to a close\, the sounds of nature take center stage. As dusk deepens\, the farm’s resident whippoorwill begins to call\, repeating its distinctive song as it patrols the boundaries of its territory. Logan Parker\, an avian field ecologist who has been studying these elusive nocturnal birds around Maine\, will make a presentation at 8pm about the work of the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project and how we can work together to help whippoorwills and nighthawks recover.  \nTo keep these events open to all\, there is no admission fee. DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, July 13th from 4pm-7pm for the return of our Pumpkin Vine Family Farm Contra Dance! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n We hope you can join us for our Fourth Annual Pumpkin Vine Contra Dance! \nWe are delighted to be resuming Contra Dances at the farm\, after being interrupted by Covid from 2020 -2024. We decided to make good use of the time\, and groomed a new dance floor: a FLAT grassy lawn in our lower field. No more sashaying into gopher holes!  \nSteampacket (Tamora Goltz\, David Stimson\, & Glen Loper) will be performing on fiddle\, mandolin and guitar  between 4 – 7\, and Chrissy Fowler will be calling the dance.  The event starts at 4:00 with some relaxed waltzes (complete with waltz tutorial!). At 4:30 Chrissy will lead us into contra\, square\, and circle dances. Intermission is at 5:30\, then back to the dance at 5:40. At 6:40 the evening will wind down with some more waltzes. No experience necessary; Chrissy makes it fun for all ages and skill levels\, and teaches you all you need to know. And even if you don’t want to dance\, the music\, food\, and ambiance are worth the trip : )  \nRed Stove Farm and Provisions will be cooking up something fresh and yummy (maybe barbecue?) to keep you nourished and dancing\, and we’ll have smoothies and other drinks for sale – but we DO RECOMMEND that you bring water bottles and also a blanket or lawn chair when you need to take a break.  \nContra dance descends from 17th century European country dances brought to colonial New England\, and remains a vibrant part of Maine arts & culture. Come experience this timeless community tradition & celebrate midsummer with fiddles\, folk dance and friends in our beautiful farm fields!  \n The event is open to all ages and everybody is welcome. There is a suggested donation of $10 / person or $25 / family\, but we will gratefully accept whatever you can afford\, including simply the gift of your presence : )  \nContact the farm at info@pumpkinvinefamilyfarm.com or call (207) 549-3096 for more information. Hope to see you soon!

SUMMARY:Pumpkin Vine Dairy Queen: A Goat Pageant
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 10th from 11am-3pm for a fresh take on an old tradition: The Crowning of the Pumpkin Vine Family Farm Dairy Queen! \n(The Rain Date for this event is August 17th) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In some states\, she’s a human\, but around here the goats steal the show. We are excited to crown our Second Pumpkin Vine Dairy Queen from among our hard-working\, high-spirited\, and undeniably beautiful herd of dairy goats. \nInspired by both Alpine and Indian traditions\, we have planned a special day to celebrate these amazing animals\, who give so much to so many. They’ve been working hard since the spring\, producing milk for our goat cheese\, yogurt\, and smoothies. We want to recognize their efforts and celebrate our partnership with our furry\, four-legged friends. We’ve been hard at work making glamorous outfits and trimming their hooves so they shine on their big day! \nAs part of our festive farmers market\, we’ll have soft fresh Bavarian pretzels\, smoothies and other treats for an al fresco lunch\, and a very special puppet show from Barn Arts productions. Make a day of it\, and take some time to celebrate the animals that give us all so much! \nThe Day’s Schedule: \n11 – 12: Vote on your Favorite Dairy Princess from among this year’s doe kids and grab some snacks at the farmers market. Make your own willow crown and wand! \n12:00 Goat Parade & Crowning of the Dairy Queens: Welcome the girls as they enter in their finery\, and cheer the winners of this year’s special categories (Hint: personality matters too!)  We’ll have photo opps with all the winners afterwards\, so bring your camera!
